Initiate Change
An advocate takes the lead. Whether you are an employee in a corporation, a part-time worker at a small business or an entrepreneur running your own company, you can initiate changes in your work life that will allow you to balance your work with the needs of your autistic child.
Learning to hold your boundaries and control your time will certainly help you accomplish more of your top priorities. But if you find that that is still not enough, you may need to look seriously at changing how you work. Autism is not going to change. Of course, your child’s specific needs will evolve and shift over time. But having an autistic child in your family—whether she is a child, a teen or an adult—is always going to demand a lot of your energy and time. Changing your work situation to accommodate that may be a good solution to finding the right balance.
Adjusting your work to accommodate autism may be more feasible than you think. Creativity and initiative can really pay off. In my law practice and at the Special Needs Network, I have watched parent advocates make remarkable changes in their work schedules to find the time they need for their children. Some of them are included here. If these do not meet your current needs, keep striving for a solution that works for you. Turn to your empowerment circle for more ideas. Read everything you can about alternative jobs online. Get a mentor. Learn new career skills. You can find a way.
